While a number of technical innovations during the 16th and 17th centuries increased production output for some goods, such as Iron or Cloth, the biggest industrial improvement came in the form of optimized organization. By creating manufactories, often outside city limits, merchant capitalists could both bypass the ancient guild laws that inhibited mass production and pioneer ways to increase output through the organization and specialization of centralized labor. The forerunners of later Industrialization were able to increase production by facilitating access to raw materials and organizing labor on a mass scale, rather than by investing in expensive new machinery. This was in itself a huge change from the often heavily regulated methods of old, and together with later technical advances, this new mode of production would come to revolutionize society.
