Guelphs and Ghibellines
The Guelphs and Ghibellines have been fighting for dominance over Italy for centuries, ever since the Investiture Controversy pitted the Catholic Church Leader Title and the Holy Roman Empire Leader Title against each other. The Guelphs support the Roman authority over the peninsula, while Ghibellines are considered Imperial loyalists holding their allegiance true to the Holy Roman Empire. But matters have spiraled well beyond their initial positions, and both sides now represent a diversity of interests; the different countries are no strangers to switching sides when doing so might benefit them.
