Hajduks
As the central authority of medieval kingdoms fractures under the weight of imperial expansion, the social vacuum is filled by the Hajduks. Originally simple cattle drovers (hajtó) and seasonal laborers, these men have transitioned into a semi-mythical class of guerrilla fighters and highwaymen. They operate in small, disciplined bands (cheta) led by a Harambaša, governed by strict internal codes of conduct that emphasize loyalty and the protection of the local peasantry (the raja). In our eyes, they are nothing more than brigands; to the commoners, they are the only shield against the depredations of foreign tax collectors and unruly invaders. By codifying their presence within our military structure, we empower a force that thrives on the very lawlessness of the frontier.
