Meritocracy
Individuals of great prestige and power often appoint those closest to them to particularly influential positions.
The advent of Meritocracy as an institution and thought movement was largely popular in the courts of China. There, Confucius himself supported the notion that those who govern should do so on the basis of merit, not due to inherited status. This led to the replacement of the traditional Chinese aristocracy with one based solely on merit.
The development of this institution would cause ripples across and beyond the borders of Asia, eventually reaching the royal courts of Europe, even those whose nobles had a crushing grasp on the mechanisms of power and authority.
