Feudalism
Over time, many societies develop stronger and more permanent institutions of government. After the fall of the Roman Empire, much of Europe gradually developed into a feudal system, a structure in which Commoners performed labor on properties owned by wealthy Nobility in exchange for protection and the right to use that land for their own purposes.
For similar reasons, parallel systems of land tenure and reciprocal obligation have formed across the world, some with roots that go even further back than European feudalism.
