For decades, the cultural figure of the Zbojník (Highland Outlaw), epitomized by Juraj Jánošík, has become a military ideal in the minds of our people. This is the 'Culture of the Forest', where young men flee into the mountains to wage a guerrilla war against feudal oppression. While we have viewed them as bandits, the populace sees them as defenders. This cultural archetype has fostered a partisan mindset in the Slovak psyche: a distrust of central authority and a mastery of the scorched earth and mountain ambush tactics that can serve us well if we manage to nationalize it.
