The Estates General is the assembly of the feudal government of French. It has a legislative and consultative role, and represents the three estates of the country: the Nobility, the Clergy, and the Commoners, which itself encompasses the Burghers. Unlike other Parliaments and Assemblies, the approval of the Estates General when making adjustments to the law, such as tax increases, is optional.
