Ius Teutonicum
Since the times of the eastern marches of the Carolingian Empire, German peoples have been expanding and settling further east. Known as Ostsiedlung, this influx of German settlers is often encouraged by local rulers to fill sparsely populated areas. These settlers are subject to a special type of law, the Ius Teutonicum, offering them special privileges like tax exemptions and the right to establish self-governing towns.
