Originally, all soldiers in the Kèlè-Bolo levies are horon, or 'freemen', but the latest developments in Mali have forced the inclusion of jonow, 'slaves', to serve in the army as fighters instead of weapon-bearers. These slave warriors would thereafter be known as 'Sofa', protecting fortifications as part of garrison forces.
