The region has pioneered the use of the Roca (Rocca in standard Italian: the Fortress), a fortress with rounded towers that deflect fire from primitive cannons. These fortifications mean that every village is a tactical strongpoint. They will force invaders into a slow, attritional style of warfare, allowing the small Romagnol states to punch far above their weight in Mediterranean power politics.
