Also called Niraya, Naraka refers to the realms of suffering where one's bad karma is cleansed before being reincarnated. There are many Naraka realms, and both the time an individual must reside in them and the punishments they will receive while doing so depends on how much karma they need to gain before being reborn in one of the upper realms.
