The acolytes of the Eleusinian mysteries follow the myth of the abduction of Persephone from her mother, Demeter, by the king of the underworld, Hades, and her subsequent release and deception. To the initiated, this myth represents the cycle of growth and rebirth of all plant life and the eternity of life as it flows from one generation to the next.
