Devşirme System
Slaves are acquired for the ruling household through the practice of devşirme: Carefully chosen non-Muslim children, usually Christians between the ages of 12 and 14, are sent to live with Turkish families to learn their language and the rules of Islam beliefs before eventually being brought to the capital. Most join the Janissaries, a highly disciplined standing army, while those who displayed particular leadership and intellectual skilled are enrolled directly into the royal household as pages.
