This is a type of republic where the leader, called the Stadtholder, rules for life. Traditionally, the factions supporting this government have fought over how the Stadtholder's power should be structured. Those called the Statists want to make the Stadtholder more like an Primus inter Pares, whereas the Orangists wish to treat the elected leader as some kind of king.
