Xuánzàng Travels
Xuánzàng, a Chinese Buddhist monk who lived during the Táng dynasty in the 7th century, embarked on a seventeen-year overland trip to India in order to visit it centers of learning and to gather a great number of Buddhism texts. Among other places he visited Nālandā, where he learned from the best masters, and on his return to China he brought with him more than a thousand documents, which made a great contribution to Eastern Buddhism. His trip and his records served as basis for the tale of Journey to the West, in which a monk is tasked by the Buddha to travel to India in search of some holy texts. accompanied among others by the Monkey King, Sūn Wùkōng.
