Varṇa System
Since the times of the Vēdaḥ, there has existed the concept of one's Dharma being classified as one of the four possibles: Brāhmaṇa, scholars or priests; Kṣatriya, rulers or warriors; Vaiśya, farmers or merchants; or Śūdra, artisans or servants. These classifications are not rigid, but instead represent the ideal of an individual's calling, and they have been very influential in Hindu society.
