Lippi Frescoes
We invited Filippo Lippi to paint the apse of our cathedral, and what he gave us was the Stories of the Virgin — one of the most luminous and tender fresco cycles of the fifteenth century, left unfinished only by his death in Spoleto itself, where he was buried with honors in the church he had transformed. His tomb in our cathedral turned a patronage arrangement into a permanent pilgrimage point for the cultivated and curious across all of Italy. This artistic legacy deepens our intellectual reputation and draws the learned visitors whose presence sharpens the quality of inquiry throughout our city.
