It is unavoidable that ships deteriorate while sailing. The beating of the waves and the bite of saltwater accumulate over time, damaging both the hull and ropes no matter how well-constructed the vessel. To alleviate this, sailors are used to performing regular maintenance on their ships to keep them in prime condition, and when more significant damage is received, even being able to keep it afloat until they reach a safe harbor.
