The Enlightened Court
The generation of reformers who have gathered around our court have convinced us that the task of government is not merely to preserve what exists but to discover what works better and systematically replace the old with the new. We open our administration to men trained in the academies and experimental societies of the age, commission reports on everything from agricultural yields to judicial procedure, and fund the education of a class of administrators who can read a budget as readily as a treaty. This Còrt Ëluminà (Corte Illuminata in standard Italian: Enlightened Court) produces a state whose institutions are continuously improved by reason rather than paralyzed by custom, making our government faster, our research more productive, and our subjects more literate.
