The plains of the Po where they open onto our territory have long supported a class of lesser noble horsemen whose wealth depended on the quality of their horses and the reputation of their lance arm. We have organized these scattered men-at-arms into a formal cavalry, standardizing their equipment and training in coordinated maneuver rather than the individual charge that served in an earlier age. This Cavalleria Piemontese can screen our flanks, pursue a broken enemy, and fight in the loose formations that modern battlefield conditions demand, giving our armies a mobility that infantry alone cannot provide.
