The Italian Wars proved that medieval curtain walls could not stop artillery for more than a morning, and our hill towns responded by turning their greatest natural asset — the ridge, the spur, the ravine — into systems of angled bastions and compact Rocche that made each town a distinct tactical problem. Architects and military engineers rebuilt our defenses in stone and rammed earth, positioning artillery platforms at the angles that most terrified attacking batteries. This tradition of fortification adapted to terrain makes our territories harder to overrun and far costlier for any invader to hold.
