Although light cavalry formations are an old concept, the first Balkan hussars — or gusars — appeared as auxiliary units of Byzantium, recruited mainly from Byzantine-held Serbia in the 10th and 11th centuries. Even after Byzantine power dwindled, this tradition remained, and was further refined over the following centuries.
