Due to the nature of the monsoon tradewinds and its specific location, Gujarat has long served as the hub of the East-West trade in the Indian Ocean, connecting the Red Sea, Egypt, and Malacca. Due to this, Gujarat merchants were important middlemen bringing such precious goods as spices from the Maluku Islands and Silk from China, and then selling them to the merchants coming from the west.
