Adelantamiento System

Led by an Adelantado, the Adelantamiento is an administrative system developed in Castile by which members of the Nobility are placed as governors over frontier or newly conquered territories, reporting directly to the ruler. Adelantados have broad military, judicial, and administrative authority in these remote regions, and often finance expeditions themselves in exchange for land and expanded governing rights.
