Ribeira das Naus
The Navy Arsenal site, formerly a medieval naval dockyard called tercenas, witnessed a shift during King D. Manuel I's construction of the Paço da Ribeira. The establishment of new tercenas, known as Ribeira das Naus, to the west of the royal palace, played a crucial role in building ships for the Portuguese Discoveries. These shipyards, the largest in the Portuguese Empire, served as a model for overseas establishments, notably in Goa and Cochin.
