The twin choir lofts of San Marco, facing each other across the golden nave, gave birth to the Cori Spesâi (Cori Spezzati in standard Italian: Divided Choirs) technique — two ensembles answering and overlapping in a controlled interplay of sound that only the basilica's extraordinary acoustics can fully realize. Adrian Willaert, the Gabrielis, and Claudio Monteverdi all worked within this tradition, and the musicians they trained carried the Venetian polyphonic style to courts from Madrid to Vienna. This school of music makes Venice the acknowledged capital of European sound, and the stream of composers and singers our city produces carries Venetian prestige to places our galleys never reach.
