The cog was a small ship widely used in medieval Europe. Characterized by having a single mast with a square sail, and constructed with overlapping planks, it was an evolution of the Viking merchant ships. Their construction made them more suitable for navigating the North Atlantic than the Mediterranean vessels, while their simpler rigging required fewer people to operate. It was used extensively by the Hanseatic League until eventually replaced by the hulk.
