Boniface of Montferrat, crowned King of Thessalonica in 1204, established a northern Latin kingdom that controlled the vital Via Egnatia and much of Macedonia, creating a wealthy and strategically important realm whose capital became a glittering center of Frankish court life, Italian commerce, and Orthodox–Catholic coexistence under Latin domination. Although repeatedly threatened by surrounding enemies, the kingdom's barons maintained a proud martial tradition and a flourishing economy based on grain, wine, and transit trade, ensuring that Thessalonica remained one of the brightest jewels in the Frankokratia.
