Ponte delle Torri
The ancient Ponte delle Torri — part Roman aqueduct, part fortified bridge — strides across the Tessino gorge on ten great piers, giving us control of the main Apennine passage between Umbria and the Marche. Merchants who wish to cross the mountains must cross our bridge, and we have never been reluctant to collect what that privilege is worth in tolls, intelligence, and deference. This structure makes our territory a natural chokepoint, pulling trade inward and making any would-be aggressor calculate the cost of that crossing before they march.
