We have replaced this improvised tradition with a formal ordinance that fixes the size, equipment, and training standards of our infantry and binds our cities and rural lords to consistent obligations that can be called on at any time. This Ordinansa Piemontèisa (Ordinanza Piemontese in standard Italian: Piedmontese Ordinance) gives our army a professional core that holds its cohesion between campaigns, advancing the discipline and tradition of arms that lesser levies can never maintain.
