In the early days of the Holy Roman Empire, the Brandenburg area was settled and governed by Slavic tribes, until the Emperor created the Northern March to subjugate and fortify the area. Over time, this Northern March evolved into Brandenburg, becoming one of the most important regions in the Holy Roman Empire.
