Teatro alla Scala
We have raised a theatre on the site of the old church of Santa Maria alla Scala, large enough to seat two thousand and fitted with stage machinery that no other house in Europe can match. The first night drew every ambassador, merchant prince, and noble family who could claim a connection to Milan, and within a season premieres here were being discussed from London to Saint Petersburg. This stage makes our court the cultural arbiter of the continent, and the artists who succeed at La Scala carry our city's name everywhere they travel.
