The Lombard Chiaroscuro
Michelangelo Merisi, born in a small town near Bergamo, developed a way of painting light and shadow so direct and brutal that it made the work of every other school look artificial by comparison. His followers spread the Chiaroscuro technique from our cities to Rome, Naples, and Madrid, and patrons have started to commission works explicitly in the Lombard manner. This reputation turns our cities into destinations for collectors and scholars, and the artists we train are in demand everywhere they go.
