The Meißen Lion, also known as the Markmeißnische Löwe, holds a special place in heraldry. Representing the Wettin dynasty's symbol of power, an armored black lion with a red tongue gazes to the left on a golden field. Its image appears in various forms, including on painted tombstones, ensigns, helmets, coins, and seals, symbolizing the affiliation of the city of Meissen to the Mark Meißen and adorning the coats of arms of numerous towns and communities. Some link it to the recolored Thuringian lion.
