Trade convoys are obviously a very juicy target for any pirate. Ships full to the brim with goods and coins are a booty that few will let pass through. Thus, providing those trade convoys with defense armament to deter those attacks is vital. Having the trade fleets be accompanied by frigates or any other armed vessel ensures their safety.
