The Ligurian coast has produced navigators out of all proportion to its size — Cristoforo Colombo, who opened the western Atlantic to Castilian ambition, Giovanni Caboto, who mapped the northern coast of the New World for the English crown, and a generation of pilots whose skills carried them into every ocean that European ships reached.
