Gozan Jissetsu
The 'Five Mountains System' originated in China from state-sponsored Chán Buddhist monasteries, atop the holy mountains that gave the system its name. In Japan, the practice continued in the Kamakura period by the sponsoring of the Zen temples, the Five Mountains of Kyōto and the Five Mountains of Kamakura. By maintaining our sponsorship of such institutions, we can use them to help stabilize our rule.
