Machiavelli's argument against mercenary armies fell for generations on reluctant ears — the guilds preferred to pay condottieri than to march themselves — but the catastrophes of 1494 and 1512 demonstrated at ruinous cost what hired soldiers will and will not die for. We answer by organizing the men of our districts into standing companies, trained and equipped at public expense, whose stake in the defense of Florence is not a monthly wage but their own homes and trades. This commitment to arming our own citizens produces infantry that will hold when paid soldiers would retreat, giving our army a core of men who fight for something that cannot be renegotiated at the end of the campaign season.
