The regular use of combined arms over several centuries has led to the dominance of this type of warfare. Light infantry and cavalry have the role of weakening and disorganizing enemy forces, while simultaneously screening and protecting their own. Heavy infantry and cavalry bear the brunt of the fighting, seeking decisive charges to rout the enemy, while artillery and auxiliary forces support them from a distance at the rear.
