The world is a big place, and in order to develop our global trade, we must take some serious risks. Luckily there are merchant in our country willing to do so, using mostly their own capital. By sanctioning such companies with a government charter giving them special rights to exercise government powers as well as monopolies in certain areas, we can control and encourage commercial development of everything from foreign trade networks to our colonial possessions overseas.
