The Dòta
Bologna became the intellectual laboratory of Europe with the rise of its organized university, the oldest in the world, earning the nickname of La Dòta (La Dotta in standard Italian: the Learned). Culturally, this moved the society away from feudal trial-by-combat toward a civilian jurisprudence based on recovered Roman Law. This produced a class of professional lay-notaries and judges who could manage complex urban administrations, giving Bologna an unmatched bureaucratic efficiency.
