The Parthenon Dukes
Otto de la Roche, first Duke of Athens, established his court amid the ruins of the Acropolis, converting the ancient Parthenon into a Catholic cathedral dedicated to Our Lady while ruling over a duchy that stretched from Attica to Boeotia. Under his successors, the duchy became a surprising center of cultural exchange where Frankish knights patronized Greek scribes, Italian merchants traded in Piraeus, and scholars debated philosophy in sight of marble temples. All this produced a distinctive aristocratic society that prized both the martial virtues of chivalry and an appreciation for the Hellenic past that had so long been ignored by Western conquerors. We must reinstate this court to its past glory.
