The Catalan Company
After being hired and then betrayed by the Byzantine emperor, the ferocious Catalan Grand Company turned against their former paymasters and, in 1311, annihilated the Frankish duke Walter V of Brienne at the Battle of the Cephissus, seizing control of the Duchy of Athens and establishing a period of Catalan rule. These battle-hardened Almogàvers introduced a more ruthless mercenary ethos to Greek affairs, fortifying key strongholds, extracting tribute from the countryside, and maintaining their grip through a combination of terror and disciplined infantry tactics until internal strife and Aragonese intervention eventually shifted power back toward a more conventional feudal regime.
