As one of the few bastions of an independent Armenian state, Armenia is governed by feudal suzerains called meliks, as the old system of Nakharar Titles collapsed after the Mongol invasions. The relationship between meliks and their subordinates is that of a military commanding officer and junior officer, and not of feudal lord and a serf.
