The Patriarchate of Aquileia
Aquileia was once the fourth city of the Roman Empire and later the seat of a patriarchate that claimed authority over the whole of northeastern Italy and the eastern Alps, a tradition of ecclesiastical prestige that lingered in our institutions long after the political power that created it had passed. We draw on this heritage to build institutions of learning that reflect the city's ancient role as a center of transmission between the Latin west and the Slavic and Germanic east. This tradition of the Patriarchate of Aquileia as a crossroads of cultures and books gives our state an unusual depth of literacy and a tolerance rooted in centuries of managing Christians of different rites under a single ecclesiastical roof.
