Villehardouin's Valor
Geoffrey of Villehardouin, marshal of Champagne and eyewitness chronicler of the Fourth Crusade, composed one of the earliest vernacular histories in Old French, immortalizing the deeds of his companions and the astonishing capture of Constantinople in vivid, heroic prose that circulated widely among the nobility of Western Europe. His chronicle served not only as a record but as propaganda and inspiration, rallying fresh knights and pilgrims to reinforce the beleaguered Latin states, while fostering a shared sense of chivalric brotherhood among the scattered Frankish lords who continued to view themselves as crusaders holding God's frontier against schismatic and infidel alike long after the original host had dispersed. It is time to recover that spirit for the challenges of our army.
