Nanbokuchō Jidai
Following the dismantling of the Kamakura Shogunate, Imperial rule was reinstated under Takaharu with the help of Takauji in what is known as the Kenmu Restoration. However, the two former allies quickly became bitter rivals. Takaharu wanted to restore the supremacy of the Imperial rule like it was in the Heian Period, which earned him/her the discontent of many in the warrior class, including Takauji. The latter was pushed out from the capital and forced to flee to Kyūshū, but was able to return to Kyōto in 1336 and seize it, establishing a new Japanese Shogunate under him/her and enthroning a new Emperor. In January 1337, Takaharu fled the capital and established his/her own court at Yoshino, starting the period known as Nanbokuchō Jidai, the Northern and Southern Courts.
