They were instigated by Cossack Ivan Bolotnikov, who sought to combat social injustices, abuses of power, and economic difficulties. The rebellion received substantial backing from a range of estates, including peasants, Cossacks, and dissatisfied segments of the nobility. At one point, the rebellion controlled over seventy towns in southern Russia, and the Tsar was forced to brutally suppress it in order to regain control.
