The Salt Riot
The rising cost of Salt is stirring up resentment amongst the Commoners, who depend on its availability to preserve food. They are threatening to target those deemed responsible, mainly the Nobility and Clergy whose abuse of power and unjust taxation are considered the main culprit. The cost of salt has steadily risen as a result of a variety of factors, causing significant economic hardships for the peasant population. Salt was at the time a crucial ingredient in order to preserve food, and its unaffordability brought many on the brink of starvation. The rioters targeted several boyar and Church properties, and the rebellion was only quelled after the Tsar had several members of the nobility arrested as well as agreed to regulate the price of salt to temporarily alleviate the economic hardships.
