21082historical_info = flavor_eng.207.historical_info Cornelis Drebbel was a Dutch inventor who built the first navigable submarine in 1620 while working for the Royal Navy. Between 1620 and 1624 he successfully built and tested two more submarines, while a third and final version was demonstrated to King James I in person and several thousand Londoners. The submarine managed to stay submerged for three hours and was tested on several occasions. Despite its success, the Admiralty never implemented the design as a result of a lack of enthusiasm for its usability.
